INVEST IN ETERNITY

We give in response to a generous God who gave up everything to start a relationship with us!
His generosity compels us to live generous lives!

“Every Sunday each of you make an offering and put it in safekeeping. Be as generous as you can.” 1 Corinthians 16:1–4

Resources To Help You Discover The Gift of Giving

What Does God Say About Giving?

At Blaze Church, we believe that giving is a gift from God. The reason why we give is because God first gave to us. Giving is a responsive act of worship.

Matthew 6:21 (NIV) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:24 (NIV) “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

We might have expected Jesus to say, You can’t serve God and the devil. But he says the number one contender for your heart - the thing that poses a threat to devotion to God is MONEY!
So God gave us the greatest weapon against devotion to our money - generosity! When we give, we combat greed! Have you ever met a greedy, generous person? The two can’t coexist!

Five Values of Biblical Giving

We believe there are five values for biblical giving found in the New Testament. Giving Should Be:

Willing and Cheerful

2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT) You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

A Regular Pattern

1 Corinthians 16:2 (NIV) On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income

Proportionate To One’s Ability

1 Corinthians 16:2 (NIV) On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income

Generous

2 Corinthians 8:3 (NIV) For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.

Sacrificial

Mark 12:43-44 (NIV) “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

What About Tithing?

What about tithing? The tithe, or “first fruits” of our labor/income belong to God. We find this principle all through God’s Word. Tithing, giving God the first 10% of our income to the local church, is the primary, practical way we acknowledge that God is first (Proverbs 3:9–10).

Understand that tithing existed before the law, tithing was commanded under the law, and tithing is still good for us today. While it may not be explicitly commanded in the New Testament, what we do see is that people who were changed by Jesus always gave more than the law required. We would say that because of what Jesus has done, tithing becomes the bare minimum for us today.

The best question to ask when it comes to giving is, “Because of how much God has given me, how much do I get to give back to Him?” Giving is a gift. It is a privilege. We get to give, we don’t have to give.
